Black-owned companies lack exposure,The New Age, 23 Sep 2016, David Sithole



WAU a trade union based in the Mooinoi area of the North West province has expressed concern at the very low figures of black businesspeople participating in mining activities and has called for an awareness initiative among stakeholders in the sector to redress this. Eliphas Ngoepe, who is the union's general secretary, believes the lack of knowledge about the modalities associated with establishing a mining venture among many black entrepreneurs was at the heart of the current situation in which operations in the sector are being dominated by white people. “You will find most black businesspeople taking part in mining activities only manage to secure contracts that have to do with delivering tissues or cleaning activities. We are saying that in order for the sector to meet their transformation objectives, then more blackowned.companies must play a key role in core mining activities such as drilling and the transportation of ore.
