In August we honour, as we do each year, the women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 to demand change in South Africa when the apartheid regime was firmly entrenched in a country and world that was dramatically different from that in which we live today. Each August, we claim the whole month as a nation to honour women. We also use this opportunity to cast the spotlight on the challenges that continue to confront women; challenges that arise from our history, and challenges that some in our society continue to use today to obstruct the development of women and undermine the contribution women make to the nation at large.
