NEF powers up Newcastle plant

The National Empowerment Fund (NEF) has started the construction of a plant in Newcastle,KwaZulu Natal, to generate electrical power and steam from renewable sources as part of its R2,9bn project pipeline.

The R150m plant, KC Energy, will be commissioned in September next year to supply 6MW of electricity and 60t/hour of steam to Karbochem, a producer of synthetic rubber.

“The plant will use discarded coal from an old mine dump,” says Mduduzi Dlamini, senior investment associate at the NEF's strategic projects fund. The coal was discarded after being partially burnt or because it was of poor quality.
