President Jacob Zuma has promised 3 600 jobs for Newcastle residents at the city's new shopping mall, the largest in the province's northern region. Zuma officially opened the Newcastle Mall last Thursday at a glitzy launch attended by the crème de la crème of the province's business, social and political elite. Addressing the crowd, Zuma said the mall was not only important for job creation but for developing the economy of the area. “We urge wholesalers and retailers who will operate in this mall and elsewhere to promote local economic development by sourcing supplies from these emerging producers and from small and medium enterprises in general,” he said. The mall is the brainchild of Durban businessman Vivian Reddy, who also owns various casinos in the province. During construction, which took more than two years, about 1200 people, the majority being locals, were employed on the project.
