Unique mariculture potential of Saldanha Bay on the South African West coast is set to receive a boost with a cash injection from the government and skills transfer leading to the establishment of the first black owned mussel farms.

Six formerly disadvantaged individuals are presently making the transition from employees of Blue Bay Premium Shellfish to fully fledged commercial farmers. The increase in production volume should give local producers the critical mass they need to start influencing the market in their favour and unlock new economies of scale, say those involved in the deal. Blue Bay launched a pilot BEE project in 2003, identifying six of its current employees to become shareholders in a company called lmbaza Mussels (Pty) Ltd.
