Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) management met representatives of the Utatu-Sarhwu union on 3 January to discuss safety measures for Metrorail employees and commuters. This followed the Christmas Day murder of driver J P du Plessis in the control cabin of a commuter set at Hercules in Pretoria. Prasa has announced an allocation of R100 million to complement current security measures through the introducing of technology such as CCTV surveillance, Metrorail's Lillian Mofokeng told the press. Mobile armed guards are to be deployed in Identified hotspot areas”. Helicopter services would be contracted to enable rapid response to emergency situations.
